Sheri Skele is a proud Bidjara woman and a contemporary Aboriginal artist sharing her culture, experiences and hopes for healing history through her knowledge and storyworks. She began painting as a way to connect with her culture and quickly realised that it was also an incredibly meditative and spiritual experience. When she’s not in the studio painting she is usually wrangling her two daughters, Heart and Haven and soaking up her newest addition Huxley, who all keep her grounded and busy.

‘Coastal Beaches’ by Skeri Skele

Gubbi Gubbi country boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This artwork is filled with elements from my local beaches including the foredunes which are a critical part of the dune ecosystem. They provide a reservoir of sand to help replenish the beach following erosion events, and act as a barrier to protect the area from tidal surges, waves and saltwater intrusion. You will also see native shrubs such as pig face which serve as traditional Aboriginal food as well as have an important role to play in dune stabilisation. In this piece there are tide lines which sometimes run the entire length of the beach and help to indicate where might be a good place to hunt for fresh Pippies or throw a line in for some Brim or Flathead. You will see different groups of people gathering along the beach sharing food, yarning and enjoying the beauty of our coastal beaches.

We are so thrilled to be collaborating with Sheri to showcase her incredible talent with 40% of profits from the ‘Coastal Beaches’ collection being donated to the Warlukurlangu Artists.
